The World Travel Awards 2011 have honoured Soneva Gili by Six Senses with not one, but two, prestigious awards at the recent gala ceremony held in SOHO Square, Egypt.

The luxury resort boasts private idyllic surroundings for travellers taking Maldives holidays and upscale accommodation comprising 45 spacious overwater villas on stilts.

The World Travel Awards are known within the travel industry as the “Oscars of travel and tourism” and this year, approximately 213,000 travel industry professionals took part in the voting process.

The WTA 2011 African and Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony took place at the Egypt Hall in SOHO Square in Sharm el Sheikh on 16th September. Attendees of the event included government ministers, tourist board chiefs and travel company executives from all over the world.

General Manager of Soneva Gili by Six Senses, Iain McCormack, said: “It is a tremendous honour to be named the Indian Ocean’s Leading Luxury Resort in addition to the Maldives’ Leading Luxury Hotel.

“We are proud to be recognised as the standard-bearer for luxury resorts in the region, and these awards are representative of our hosts tireless efforts to provide the highest levels of service to our guests whilst constantly striving to surpass our own achievements, I am honoured to collect the awards on behalf of the entire team.”

Soneva Gili by Six Senses is situated on the private Lankanfushi Island just a short boat ride from the capital Male. Situated in a lagoon surrounded by turquoise crystal clear waters, the resort is an upscale retreat for travellers taking Maldives holidays.
Jetties stretch across the sparkling water to spacious luxury stilted villas that feature private rooftop and overwater sundecks, daybeds, open-air private bathrooms, and modern amenities including air conditioning, espresso Machines, mini bars, personal safes, satellite TV, and CD, DVD, hi-fi stereo systems.

During holidays to the Indian Ocean resort, guests can choose from a selection of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments in glass floor-panelled spa treatment rooms; savour delicious cuisine from several dining options including the underground gourmet cellar; and enjoy activities such as yoga and tai chi sessions, Hobicat sailing, canoeing and windsurfing.

Soneva Gili by Six Senses is no stranger to receiving awards and so far this year, the resort has beaten off competition from other Maldives hotels and has been recognised by Condé Nast Traveller (UK) – The Gold List 2011, Condé Nast Traveller (UK) – Readers Awards 2011, and was given the Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor.

The Maldives also won the 2011 World Travel Award for the “Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Destination”.
